The Lion King is a 2019 American live-action film directed by Jon Favreau and produced by Walt Disney Pictures. It is a photorealistic computer animated remake of Disney’s traditionally animated 1994 film of the same name. The story journeys to the African savanna where a future king is born. Simba (Donald Glover) idolizes his father, King Mufasa (James Earl Jones), and takes to heart his own royal destiny. But not everyone in the kingdom celebrates the new cub’s arrival. Scar (Chiwetel Ejiofor), Mufasa’s brother and former heir to the throne, has plans of his own. The battle for Pride Rock is ravaged with betrayal, tragedy and drama, ultimately resulting in Simba’s exile. With help from a curious pair of newfound friends, Pumbaa (Seth Rogen) and Timon (Billy Eichner), Simba will have to figure out how to grow up and take back what is rightfully his.
The score is by Hans Zimmer, who also composed the 1994 animated version, for which he won the Academy Award for Best Original Score in 1995. Zimmer’s works are notable for integrating electronic music sounds with traditional orchestral arrangements. Since the 1980s, he has composed music for over 150 films.
Elton John also returned to rework his musical compositions from the original film before his retirement, with Beyoncé assisting John in the reworking of the soundtrack. John and Tim Rice also wrote a new song for the film’s end credits, titled “Never Too Late” and performed by John. “Spirit”, performed by Beyoncé and written by herself, Ilya Salmanzadeh, and Labrinth, was released on July 9, 2019, as the lead single from the soundtrack. The film also features all the songs from the original film, a cover of The Tokens’ “The Lion Sleeps Tonight”, and the song “He Lives in You” from Rhythm of the Pride Lands and the Broadway production.
