Paterson is a 2016 drama film written and directed by Jim Jarmusch.
The film shows one week, beginning with Monday, in the life of Paterson (Adam Driver), a bus driver ho happens to live in the city of Paterson, New Jersey. Save for the weekend, every day Paterson follows the same routine, differing only in the details: he gets up early and goes to drive his bus, observing the city as it drifts across his windshield and overhearing fragments of the passengers’ conversations. During pauses, he writes – methodically composing poems in the notebook he takes to work each day. After his driving shift’s over, he travels the same way back, and later in the evening he takes Marvin, his wife’s dog, out for a walk, stops in a bar for a beer, where he observes the other clients and the owner, Doc (Barry Shabaka Henley), interacting. Then he goes home to his beautiful wife, Laura (Golshifteh Farahani). Laura loves his poems and has urged him for a long time to publish them or at least make copies.
There’s another work of art called Paterson, namely the five-volume magnum opus written by William Carlos Williams in the mid 20th century. Williams is a ghostly inspiration here, an animating mentor-figure, even if Laura keeps muddling his name up, while Paterson is far too modest to admit his own work might want publishing. He finally gives in and promises to go to the copy shop on the weekend. But when the weekend arrives and Paterson and Laura come home from an evening out, they find that Marvin has torn apart the notebook, destroying all of his poetry….
