A Star Is Born is a 2018 American musical romantic drama film produced, directed and co-written by Bradley Cooper, in his directorial debut. A remake of the 1937 film of the same name, it stars Cooper, Lady Gaga, Andrew Dice Clay, Dave Chappelle, and Sam Elliott, and follows a hard-drinking musician who discovers and falls in love with a struggling young singer. It marks the third American remake of the original 1937 film (which starred Janet Gaynor and Fredric March), after the 1954 musical (starring Judy Garland and James Mason) and the 1976 rock musical (with Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson). The film received widespread critical acclaim, with praise for Cooper and Gaga’s performances, Cooper’s direction, the cinematography, and the music.
Jackson Maine is a country singer with a drinking problem. His main support and manager is his older brother Bobby who looks after him. Ally is a young unknown singer-songwriter who works as a waitress. Jackson discovers and falls in love with her. She has just about given up on her dream to make it big as a singer, until Jack coaxes her into the spotlight. But even as Ally’s career takes off, the personal side of their relationship is breaking down, as Jack fights an ongoing battle with his own internal demons…
Jackson Maine: Could I ask you a personal question?
Jackson Maine: Do you write songs or anything?
Ally: I don’t sing my own songs.
Jackson Maine: Why?
Ally: I just don’t feel comfortable.
Jackson Maine: Why wouldn’t you feel comfortable?
Ally: Because like almost every single person that I’ve come in contact with in the music industry has told me that my nose is too big and that I won’t make it.
Jackson Maine: Your nose is beautiful. Are you showing me your nose right now?
Jackson Maine: You don’t have to show it to me. I’ve been looking at it all night.
Ally: Oh, come on. No, you’re not.
Jackson Maine: Oh, I’m going to be thinking about your nose for a very long time.
Jackson Maine: Look, talent comes everywhere, but having something to say and a way to say it so that people listen to it, that’s a whole other bag. And unless you get out and you try to do it, you’ll never know. That’s just the truth. And there’s one reason we’re supposed to be here is to say something so people want to hear. So you got to grab it, and you don’t apologize, and you don’t worry about why they’re listening, or how long they’re going to be listening for, you just tell them what you want to say. Don’t you understand what I’m trying to tell you?
Ally: Yeah, I do. I don’t like it, but I understand it.
Jackson Maine: Oh, I think you like it a little bit.
