A Rainy Day in New York is a 2019 American romantic comedy film written and directed by Woody Allen. It stars Timothée Chalamet, Elle Fanning, Selena Gomez, Jude Law, Diego Luna and Liev Schreiber. The film follows the romantic exploits of a young couple who arrive in New York for a weekend, where they are met with bad weather and a series of adventures and misadventures.
Gatsby Welles (Timothée Chamelet), a wealthy young student at upstate Yardley College, goes to New York, his home town, with his girlfriend Ashley (Elle Fanning). Ashleigh is a journalist student and wants to interview well-known filmmaker Roland Pollard for the college paper; Gatsby is coming along to show her Manhattan. Gatsby plans lots of romantic visits, though less interested in attending his parents’ Autumn’s Gala in the evening. He and Ashleigh arrive at an upscale hotel where Ashleigh is to interview Pollard. When she goes alone to meet him, Pollard appears smitten with her good looks and invites her to go to a local private screening soon after the interview starts. When Gatsby phones, she tells him she’ll not be able to show at their rendez-vous.
While strolling alone through New York, Gatsby bumps into a student director friend who asks him to stand in for a missing actor in a test shot for a screen kiss. Gatsby is surprised when it turns out that his screen kiss is to be with Shannon (Selena Gomez), a seductive aspiring actress, who is the younger sister of a previous girlfriend. He says he likes the kiss but is involved with someone. They prepare for a second screen test kiss when prompted by the student director. He tries to telephone Ashleigh on her mobile to get together later but is put off when Pollard, his writer, and one of his stars keep Ashleigh busy.
Gatsby’s week-end romantic plans on bonding further with Ashleigh seem further delayed now……
Gatsby Welles: “One thing about New York City. You are here or you are nowhere. You cannot achieve another level of anxiety, hostility or paranoia anywhere else”
